Formal flair

Glamorous Retro Updos from the 1960s

Curls became fashionable in the 60s for everyday hair, and, unsurprisingly, they were also incorporated into formal hairstyles, too. Above is a beautiful retro hair design from June 1967 for an evening out. If you're going to a ball or gala, this is a wonderful idea. It looks better than many plain red carpet hairstyles today, because of the thick, chunky sections which add drama.

Elegant blonde updoLeft you see an ultra glamorous fancy retro wedding updo with sophisticated curls in 1965 courtesy of L'Oreal Paris. Compared to the preceding upswept style, observe the structural difference. The model's hair is mounted at a higher angle (not quite a beehive). She also has more prounced curls which end in almost perfect circles. The front part has a long, soft wave starting at the top in the middle and continuing, uninterrupted, above the ear.

High style

High fashion French updos for a ball. Classic 60s evening hair fashion. The hair magazine in which they appeared back in June 1967 said this is the work of a Parisian hair stylist. It certainly has the formal elegance one expects to find in Paris. The high number of equally sized big curls on the top and sides makes this evening updo stand out. The flip at the nape of her neck adds feminine finesse. They are uncommon but perfect, and highly recommended for wedding or prom. If you don't mind a little drama--or that's exactly what you want--you should enjoy them.

60s updoAn elegant evening updo for the lady with high style. Here's a new updo (June 1967) with solid structure and good symmetry. Big curls add flair but they're well under control. Look at that perfect crown. It's pretty as a bow. However, the humongous layers are troublesome to the eye; it's just too choppy and chunky. Softness for the night is more suitable. This woman needs some fine layers to take the edges off the ends.
